In choosing to work with Intertek, ALI selected a testing organization with an established reputation in the industry. In the late 1800s, Thomas Edison established a power generating station and began manufacturing light bulbs to bring electricity to the public - but the public was wary of electricity. To quell the fears, the Lamp Testing Bureau was established in 1896 to independently test and check on the safety and performance of Edison’s new light bulbs. Over 100 years later, the Lamp Testing Bureau (later known as ETL) is part of Intertek Testing Services, the largest product and commodities testing organization in the world. With almost 700 labs and offices located in 82 countries, Intertek conducts over 2 million inspections, certifications and tests each year.
"Intertek is recognized and respected for experience and expertise in industry product certification programs," states Byron Horak, Director of Quality for the ALI Program at Intertek. "We currently work with over 30 product certification programs in a variety of industries including HVAC, communications cable, transportation lighting, protective head gear, and building hardware. We’ve been working with most of the sponsoring industry associations for 20 years or more and our involvement with them continues to grow. Establishing access to the ALI Directory of Certified Lifts on the Internet is one example of the service offerings that have developed over time."
As the Institute and its committees work in support of the industry’s continually developing needs, the Strategic Planning Committee and the Board of Directors will be challenged from time to time to evaluate concepts which could potentially expand ALI’s Certification Program offerings. Examples of such concepts could include addressing those seeking automotive lift install instruction or automotive lift inspector certification.
