The Automotive Lift Institute, Inc., (ALI) was founded in 1945 as the trade association of U.S.
manufacturers of in-ground lifts. By 1988 ALI welcomed members from Canada as well as North American based marketers of automotive lifts produced and distributed globally.
ALI, in cooperation with the National Bureau of Standards, sponsored the first standard
governing vehicle lifts (CS142) in 1945. Today’s Institute remains diligent with regard to lift safety as a primary activity and pursues a mission of promoting the safe design, construction,
installation and use of automotive lift products.

In seeking to partner with an independent, certification program administrator, with expertise in
product safety and independent laboratory management, ALI selected a testing organization with
both a highly respected international reputation and a solid foundation. Established in 1896 to
independently test and verify the safety and performance of Thomas Edison’s new light bulbs, the
Lamp Testing Bureau (later known as ETL) is part of Intertek Testing Services, the largest
product and commodities testing organization in the world, conducting over 2 million product
inspections, certifications and tests annually. Specific to the Institute’s automotive lift Certification
Program, Intertek independently verifies automotive lift compliance to the requirements of North
America’s national standards. Automotive lifts found in compliance with the published national
electrical and mechanical requirements are eligible for listing by ALI.
