ANSI/ALI ALCTV: 2017 Standard for Automotive Lifts – Safety Requirements for Construction, Testing, and Validation

The Accepted Lift Safety and Performance Standard in North America

ANSI/ALI ALCTV: 2017 “Safety Requirements for the Construction, Testing and Validation of Automotive Lifts” is the safety and performance standard covering the design, construction, testing and validation of manually-driven, power-driven, stationary and mobile automotive lifts. It applies to car lifts, truck lifts, automotive hoists and vehicle lifts.

The standard describes:

  • Design criteria and analysis methods.
  • General construction requirements for electrical components, control devices, speeds, wireless controls, and strength of drive components.
  • Specific construction requirements for a number of lift components such as columns, runways, ramps, swing arms and load-holding devices.
  • Manufacturer quality assurance systems and procedural requirements.
  • Lift testing procedures.
  • Documentation and labeling requirements.

This version took effect July 24, 2018, replacing its predecessor, ANSI/ALI ALCTV:2011. It reflects significant updates to strengthen the testing that must be performed by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory to confirm that a lift meets the requirements outlined in the standard.

The International Building Code and a number of state, provincial and local regulations mandate that only lifts certified to meet the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard can be installed within their jurisdictions. These lifts wear the ALI Gold Certification Label and are listed in the ALI Directory of Certified Lifts.

The American National Standards Institute, Inc. (ANSI) approved this standard on January 24, 2017. Approval requires verification by ANSI that the requirements for due process, consensus, and other criteria for approval have been met by the standards developer. ALI is the ANSI Accredited Standards Developer* and sponsor of ANSI/ALI ALCTV, as well as its companion standards ANSI/ALI ALOIM “Standard for Automotive Lifts  – Safety Requirements for Operation, Inspection and Maintenance,” and ANSI/ALI ALIS “Standard for Automotive Lifts  – Safety Requirements for Installation and Service.”

The standard is available in print only and is 72 pages.
